Ryan Reynolds loves Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," and the actor is extending his fandom for the track outside of his new film, Free Guy.
Earlier this week, Carey took to TikTok to perform a duet with the actor, but he missed his cue to start singing the 1995 smash and his lack of preparation saw Carey side-eye the actor. "That wasn't part of the plan!" she captioned the post.
"Fantasy" happened to be crucial to the creative conceptualizing when producing Free Guy, according to Reynolds, who called the song the "engine" to the movie in his interview with Variety. When recalling the time he spent bonding with MC, Reynolds said that he got to connect with the pop icon and "talked to her a little bit about how much of an engine and an agent of progress that this song had been in terms of our creative process and the scripts."
Elsewhere in the discussion, Reynolds dubbed himself "a huge Mariah Carey fan," admitting that the song served as an inspiration to the film and it was a natural source of creativity for the project. "It really was one of those weird things that happened naturally. I write to music anyway, and I initially put a song in the script by The Outfield called ‘Your Love.' It’s an old ’80s tune,” he explained. "It's great, but it just didn’t have that epic scale I was looking for. And then ‘Fantasy’ just came on my playlist and everything clicked in."
