Drew Barrymore once broke up with a boyfriend because he wanted to move his mother into their apartment "indefinitely."
The 50 First Dates actress opened up about the unusual situation during Tuesday's (April 1) episode of her eponymous talk show after a viewer recalled a similar experience.
"I totally have been through something like you’ve been through, although I was not engaged. But I moved in with one of my first boyfriends and I was really excited, We get the most cute little house in Los Feliz, California, I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be a hipster with my live-in boyfriend! Oh my God, I’m Mary Tyler Moore-ing it!’”
Without disclosing her former partner's name, Barrymore revealed his plans for their new space.
"We move in, he goes, ‘By the way, my mom is going to come stay with us.’ And I was like, ‘Oh… Okay! That’s so cool! Like, for how long?’” She recalled. “And he goes, ‘Like, maybe forever? Indefinitely. She’s gonna move in with us.'"
The talk show host immediately responded by leaving the apartment and ending their relationship, telling her former flame:
"I literally go, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go.' Are you out of your mind? Your mother — have I met your mother? He’s like, ‘No.’ I’m like, ‘So, I don’t know your mother?’ He’s like, ‘No, I think you’ll be fine.’ I’m like, ‘I have mother issues! I’m leaving. Here’s my laundry basket — I’m out!'"
Speaking on motherhood, earlier in the episode, Barrymore, who shares daughters Frankie and Olive with ex-husband Will Kopelman, remarked on how difficult it is to date as a single mother, per Entertainment Weekly.
"My girls, they tell me all the time they’d love for me to meet somebody and then I’m like, ‘I don’t really know how to do this with you guys' And that’s okay! Because if there was something missing or I was really unfulfilled or I needed something, I would be true to that."
